Foundation Bond Verontruste Dierenvrienden (BVD)
Founded February 29, 1988

History

The wife of the foundation's present treasurer and the secretary have followed for some years on the moves of the woman, which was paid by the city of The Hague to reduce the number of stray cats by having them neutralized. She was suspected of malpractice. During one of the hunts we said to each other: "We look like the BVD" (BVD is the Dutch intelligence service). The foundation's name was derived from this. We used only the abbreviation until the "Stichting BVD" was founded. On October 11, 1987 the cat catcher's husband was caught by the police in a shaky and draughty shed in Monster, where a number of dead cats were found in plastic bags, sorted by color, and some cats still alive were sitting in small baskets in their own shit without food or water. Hereafter the women was dismissed.

The matter was hushed up. An attempt by the foundation BVD to reopen the case failed. First the file was missing at court, when it was finally found, important evidence was missing.

Because now no organization was active in neutralizing stray cats, the BVD was founded. It has done the work for three years without subsidizing and with volunteers only, supported by donations from the people of The Hague. Finally the foundation Zwerfkat Den Haag was founded to continue the work. The work of foundation BVD has since been restricted to the sanctuary for a lot of cats, giving information by telephone and incidental animal aid.

Our cats are held in an housefly environment. Cages are used only when the health and safety of the cats make in necessary.

These photo's were taken in the old sanctuary in Jan Blankenstraat. We now stay at Zuijlichemstraat 5 in The Hague.
Some cats live in other houses.
