| Birth
control
On an age between four and twelve
months you will notice the first signs of caterwaul. Marks of caterwaul
are friendly, coaxing behavior, a lot of screaming, restlessness
and the urge towards wandering. Once having mated, it takes 58 to 65 days
going with young.
A possibility to prevent the birth
of kittens are pills. At the first signs of caterwaul you first give one
pill a day during a few following days, for example mixed with the food,
then continue with a pill every week.
If you don't want to use pills,
you can prevent unwanted birth by separating male and female cats during
the caterwaul. The best way is an operation to neutralize them when the
pets are seven months or up. Please remember that after the operation the
male cat can still have seed for some days.
Also having the male operated
is no guarantee for having no kittens. If your pussycat goes outdoor, she
can still mate with a wandering stranger. And they come from really far
when your pussy is singing!

The
flea band
One of the dangers a stray cat
is exposed to is the flea band. When it is to tight weather influences
can turn it into a strangulating device. When put on on a cat which has
been put on the street as a young animal and is no longer attending home,
the band can grow into the flesh of the cat's neck.
More often cats suffer problems
owing to a band which is too loose. It regularly happens that if a cat
is scratching itself, the paw shoots through the band, and the cat cannot
get it back. The band then grazes the skin unto the bones.
Further there is the danger of
the end of a twig shooting into the loose band when the cat leaps in a
tree, so that the cat cannot free itself and is strangled.
Therefor it is not advisable to
use a flea band for cats which live in the street. Better is a flea drop
in the neck (careful with little children!) or flea powder. There are also
means which you can give in the cat food. Ask your vet.
